I can't remember who recced this to me. I opened up to a random story, it was about a guy who won't be 'the daddy' to some other guy's kid. Well, OK. And the kid complained that none of the other guys would be his daddy either, so he mutilated them. Random guys don't have to play the role of your daddy, kid?
Next story, a guy is friend-zoned, and the way to cure that is with a gun. Next story, a hooker won't can't pay her drug debts so her pimp raped her sister. Fox had it rough. He was dealing with all kinds of crap and didn't have anyone to turn to. Frankly, I am surprised he turned ou I received a copy of this book through a Goodreads giveaway in exchange for an honest review. Frankly, I am surprised he turned out as well as he did. This is typically not the kind of book I enjoy; I am more of an easy, fun read type person.
But I do love a deeper, darker plot every now and again. This was the perfect book to fit this craving. Not only would I recommend this book to others, but I am also hoping for a sequel but honestly, I want a sequel to almost EVERY book I like because I have issues saying goodbye to the worlds and characters. This book got a solid 4, maybe even 4. The first noteworthy thing about this book is that Fox, the main character, is objectively not a likeable person.
He whines a lot and refuses to really push himself. However, somewhere in the book you grow to love and care about him and you DO like him. I can't pinpoint exactly why this is or when it happens, but I became invested in Fox and was rooting for his happiness.

He goes through his ups and downs, but there were times when I wanted to take him by the shoulders, shake him, and ask him what the heck he was thinking. I also really liked that the book started in the past, but continued into the fututre.
Whispers in the Dark
I think Fox is in his late teens or early 20s in the present day , and the book goes pretty far into his life. This was an interesting perspective that I have never seen before. It allowed the reader to immediately know and understand the world that Fox lives in, because it is our own world.
However, it also gave the author freedom to use her imagination and change it into the world of her own.

The changes that happen are clear and beleivable, and Tabachnikov goes far enough, yet not to far, into the changes we might see in the future. Finally, like I said before, Tabachnikov manages to turn an utterly depressing book into something engaging and fun to read. I think Fox's life motto could be "he was doing well The entire book seemed to be Fox's attempts at being as little unhappy as possible rather than being as happy as possible.
But, there are shining moments where he seemed to be truly happy and the ending left it up to the reader's mind to picture a happy future for Fox. Now, some things I did not like. The theme of climate change is present throughout the book, but it seemed to be more of a means to an end for Tabachnikov to explain the changes in the future parts of the book than as a real narrative on climate change iteself. Now, that is not me saying I WISH it was a commentary about climate change, but it seems like this theme should have either been better integrated and explained or taken out.
The back cover states that "Out in the world, he encounters the problems of climate change and the eroding economy. Read Less. Error - There was an error with your download request. Try again later.
